MEDIA EXPERIMENTATION
Inspired by artists seen at the Bookmaker's Studio, I decided to experiment more with media before moving onto more refined illustrations. I used collage to develop a character design, using the most successful elements of each to create the character for my narrative. I tried other media, but decided to stick with a collaged look for the book. FINAL
For the final book I wanted to include living plants, inspired by Paula Heyes. Therefore I used Spanish moss to bind the pages of the book, and reindeer moss to create a textured cover. I found constructing the book difficult, but having made this I have learnt a lot and will know how to correct my mistakes next time. |
STARTING POINT + ARTIST RESEARCH
The inspiration for a project was a collage from the exploratory stage, which I wanted to develop further with a narrative and media experimentation. Artists I looked into included Simryn Gill, who also covered people's faces, Paula Heyes, who used living plants in her sculptures, and Sun Hyuk Kim, who used plant shapes in his sculptures to portray people's difficulties in life. NARRATIVE + ILLUSTRATION DEVELOPMENT
Having planned the narrative and created thumbnails for the illustrations, I went ahead and began to collage them digitally. I used my own photographs as textures and backgrounds, with added drawing for the character. |
